Grouped by region, because the first question is which end of the state you are building in. Since January 1, 2025, any building code a city, village or county adopts in Illinois must regulate structural design at least as strictly as the International Residential Code (20 ILCS 3105/10.18), but whether a code reaches your parcel depends on the county and on whether the land is inside a city or village. Chicago has its own Chicago Construction Codes and unincorporated Cook County its own Department of Building and Zoning, and there is little buildable acreage in either, so most Chicago-area clients build in the collar counties and beyond.
